Beach at La Racou
Wide sandy beaches dominate the coastline of Roussillon, stretching south from Narbonne in the north to Argelés-sur-Mer in the south. The nearest beaches are 20 to 30 minutes drive from the house.
The port of Collioure
The rocky coves of the Côte Vermeille complete the stretch of coastline to the Spanish border, providing an interesting alternative to the wide sandy beaches further north. The Phoenicians and Greeks first established the picturesque seaport of Collioure. It is overlooked by 2 forts and has a large sea wall protecting its small harbour and inner beach.
View south from the summit of Pic Canigou
The mountains of the Pyrenees represent one of the most beautiful alpine landscapes in the world. Within just over an hour's drive from the house you can be scaling 3000-metre peaks or exploring fantastic deep river gorges. At just under 2800 metres the stunning mountain of Pic Canigou rises dramatically from the coastal plain, dominating the surrounding area.
Cliff-face path in the Gorge de Carança
This stunning river gorge is about a 45-minute drive up the Têt valley and is not for the faint-hearted. The path initially winds its way beside the river in the gorge bottom before dividing at a bridge. The left-hand fork provides a steep but easy way forward. The right-hand fork, offers an exciting adventure along high cliff paths with metal bridges and walkways suspended in the sheer rock face.
Skiing / Boarding in the Pyrenees
The largest ski resort, Les Angles, is just 1 hour 15 minutes drive from the house. Covering a wide area, the resort offers a good selection of pistes for all abilities, up to 2150 metres. There are also a number of other resorts, of varying size. The Pyrenees has 100s of kilometres of spectacular cross-country skiing trails. Les Formiguères alone offers 100km of cross-country trails and is only 1 hour 20 minutes drive from the house.
The medieval city of Carcassonne
The citadel of Carcassonne with its fairy-tale towers and narrow cobbled streets has a spectacular setting. It is one of the finest walled cities in Europe and is full of history stretching back to 6th century BC. It can be reached via the A9 autoroute in about an hour from the house.
The Little Yellow Train
The 'Train Jaune' travels up a scenic narrow-gauge railway across high viaducts and steep mountainsides to the highest railway station in Europe at Bolquèr.
The Cathar castle of Puilarens
The Cathars were a heretical sect which existed in the Middle Ages in the then independent Languedoc. They were destroyed by a violent crusade authorised by the Pope and led by Simon de Montford. All that remains of their heroic struggles are the dramatically located castles built on high rocky sites all over the region which give commanding views of the forests and plains below.

Perpignan city centre
Perpignan is a vibrant city with French, Spanish and North African influence. Its excellent restaurants, cosmopolitan cafes and exclusive shops are only a 15 minute drive from the house.
